TimeBill on Setapp

What is different in the Setapp edition of TimeBill: licensing, updates, and how it compares to the Mac App Store version.

Last updated

Besides the Mac App Store, TimeBill is available on the Setapp marketplace, where you subscribe to TimeBill directly. Note that TimeBill is not part of the classic all-apps Setapp subscription. It is sold individually on the marketplace, so you don't need (and won't get it through) a full Setapp membership. If you installed TimeBill from Setapp, licensing works differently, and more simply, than in the App Store edition.

Everything is unlocked

The Setapp edition has no free tier and no in-app purchases. All Premium features are permanently enabled through your TimeBill subscription on Setapp:

  • Unlimited projects, tasks, and cost items
  • No watermark on invoice PDFs
  • Standalone e-invoice XML export (for example XRechnung)

The feature set is otherwise identical to the Mac App Store edition; only licensing and updates differ. For what these Premium features cover in detail, see Free vs. TimeBill Premium.

What you won't find in the Setapp edition

  • There is no Upgrade to Premium... item in the View menu, so you'll never be asked to buy anything inside TimeBill.
  • There is no Restore Purchase flow. Your license is your active TimeBill subscription on Setapp; nothing needs restoring. To manage or cancel the subscription, use your Setapp account, not the app.
  • If a premium screen ever appears, it simply confirms: "You have full access to all premium features through your Setapp subscription." Click Continue to dismiss it.
  • TimeBill never asks you for an App Store rating on Setapp.

If TimeBill ever behaves as if it were locked, check that the Setapp desktop app is installed, running, and signed in with the account that holds your TimeBill subscription. Even for marketplace purchases, the Setapp app provides the license. If that doesn't help, reach out via Help > Contact Support in TimeBill or the contact form.

Updates

The Setapp edition is not updated through the Mac App Store. The Setapp desktop client installs updates for you, and after an update TimeBill shows Setapp's "What's New" window with the release notes. The App Store edition, by contrast, updates through the Mac App Store like any other app. Neither edition has its own built-in updater.

Switching between the App Store and Setapp editions

The two editions are separate apps with separate local databases, so your projects do not carry over automatically when you switch. To move your work:

  1. In the old edition, choose File > Export > Project Export > Export All Projects and save the JSON file.
  2. In the new edition, recreate your customers first if you want imported projects re-linked: the link is restored only when the same customer already exists there.
  3. Then choose File > Import Project... and select the JSON file.
  4. Customers and the Invoice Vault are not part of the export, so bulk-export your archived invoice PDFs from the Invoice Vault in the old edition to keep copies of them.

The full checklist is in Backing up and moving to a new Mac.
