Free vs. TimeBill Premium
Exactly what the free plan includes, where its limits are, and which features TimeBill Premium unlocks.
Last updated
TimeBill on the Mac App Store is free to download and use. The free plan includes nearly the full feature set (time tracking, customers, invoicing, e-invoicing setup, the Invoice Vault), but caps how much you can create, adds a watermark to invoice PDFs, and reserves standalone e-invoice XML export for Premium. TimeBill Premium is an in-app purchase that removes all of these limitations.
The free plan limits
- 10 projects: active and archived projects count together. Archiving a project does not free up a slot; only deleting one does.
- 5 tasks per project: only visible tasks count. The hidden default task that fixed-price projects use internally does not count against the limit.
- 5 cost items per project: this is also checked when you add several items from the catalog at once. If your current items plus the selection would exceed 5, the upgrade sheet appears instead.
- 5 items in the Cost Item Catalog: clicking New Item beyond that opens the upgrade sheet.
- Watermark on invoice PDFs: every page of a generated invoice carries a diagonal "Generated with TimeBill for macOS" watermark. Timesheet PDFs are never watermarked, even on the free plan.
- No standalone e-invoice XML: exporting a standalone e-invoice XML file (for example Generate XRechnung XML for German public-sector clients) is Premium-only. Clicking it on the free plan opens the upgrade sheet.
When you hit any of these limits, TimeBill opens the TimeBill Premium sheet instead of the creation dialog — nothing is created and nothing is lost. See Can't create a new project or task if a limit surprises you.
What Premium unlocks
The TimeBill Premium sheet lists the differences directly:
- Unlimited Projects (Free: 10)
- Unlimited Tasks and Cost Items (Free: 5)
- Remove Watermark from PDF Invoices
Premium also enables standalone e-invoice XML export such as XRechnung.
How Premium is sold
Premium is available as a one-time Lifetime purchase or as a yearly or monthly auto-renewing subscription. Current prices are shown in the purchase sheet itself, and purchases are billed through your App Store account. For the purchase steps, restoring on a second Mac, and canceling, see Buying, restoring, and canceling Premium.
Using TimeBill through Setapp
If you subscribed to TimeBill on the Setapp marketplace, all Premium features are already included. There is no free tier, no watermark, and no purchase UI. (TimeBill is sold individually on Setapp; it is not part of the classic all-apps Setapp subscription.) Details are in TimeBill on Setapp.
